Fire Wise Seedlings Propagated at the Kangaroo Island Rare Plant Garden

As part of our Fire Wise funding, the crew at the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre have recently brought over a range of Fire Wise plants to be transplanted and distributed throughout the Kangaroo Island Rare Plant Garden (KIRPG) and across private properties on Kangaroo Island.

Fire Wise plants are considered either fire resistant, fire retardant or identified as low flammability and land holders are encouraged to plant these species on their properties, particularly where vegetating near built assets.

Together with the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre, Nature Conservation Society of South Australia and Bio·R, the KIRPG has compiled a list of identified Fire Wise species for Kangaroo Island, based on available literature. This list has been distributed amongst our volunteers and Fire Wise brochures will soon be distributed amongst the community.

For anyone interested in incorporating Fire Wise plants or other threatened Kangaroo Island plants on their property, please contact Deb Laver at kirpg@bior.org.au.

This project is supported by the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife and has received grant funding from the Australian Government through the Preparing Australian Communities – Local program.
